Partners; the community of Meskele Kristos, SYHLAWFA.

Where:  Meskele Kristos, Lalibela, Ethiopia

The group is working today with the community on two main issues; lack of clean water for drinking and sanitation in the local school, and the issue of indoor air pollution caused by cooking.

The Rain Harvesting System at the local school is addressing the first issue. In 2012 when Sheila and Yossi Shalhevet visited Meskele Kristos, they came to see that there is a lot of WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) related issues in the village and they contacted EwB in order to come and work with the community toward changing these conditions. After completing the appraisal and analysis process the group choose with the community to design a rain harvesting system for the kids of the local school and create a WASH educational plan to work with it. As part of the process the group works with the community; teaching on sanitation and hygiene, establishing an Engineering club for the school kids and giving tools to maintain the system. The idea is for the community to take responsibility and improve their health.

At April 2015, after testing the prototype at the Technion, the system was implemented in the school with the community, for them to use. Since then the water tank is collecting rain water for daily use (mostly for agriculture and laundry).

Today the group works on this project both for monitoring and evaluation the tank itself and designing a filter that will produce clean drinking water for the community.

The aim of this project is to improve the community’s health by sustainable access to clean water.
